Being a team physician means coping with top athletes.
Top athletes train extremely hard, often from a young age, which results in high demands on their bodies. This may easily supersede the resistance limits of some of their biological systems, leading to consultations with the team physician. The problems they present are often complex, and not always taught in medical schools, whilst the solutions to these problems are often even more complex, due to the fact that absolute rest is impossible, and certain drugs are not allowed, to mention just a few challenges.
The only way for team physicians to meet these, is to be at least as well trained as the athletes they take care of.
The newly introduced Advanced Team Physician Courses, organised under the patronage of the IOC - the first one took place in Norway in 2008 - provide a unique opportunity to learn about many of the specific skills a team physician needs. Being with people from the same “side”, with similar problems, and exchanging interactively in an exclusive group, in relaxing surroundings, is a most favourable way of improving the first-class qualities expected from a competent and efficient team physician.
The ATPC will be geared towards the practical issues of working with high-level athletes.
Experienced teachers will offer their own perception, but a strong focus will be put on reviewing and discussing complex cases covering the wide range of sports medicine.
Don’t miss such a unique opportunity!
